Članovi različitih ogranaka Akademije učestvovali su u preliminarnom glasanju u više kategorija, uključujući animirani kratki film, dugometražni dokumentarni film, kratki dokumentarni film, međunarodni dugometražni film, igrani kratki film, šminku i frizuru, originalnu muziku, originalnu pjesmu, zvuk i vizuelne efekte. Ova godina ujedno obilježava i debi nove kategorije: dostignuće u kastingu.

Film Ryana Cooglera "Sinners" nalazi se na listama najboljih u sedam kategorija: kasting, fotografija, šminka i frizura, zvuk, vizuelni efekti i dva mesta u kategoriji originalne pesme.

"Wicked: For Good" istknut je u kategorijama kastinga, filmske fotografije, šminke i frizure, originalne muzike, zvuka, vizuelnih efekata i dvije originalne pjesme koje potpisuje Stephen Schwartz.

Netflixov "Frankenstein" takođe je ostvario odličan rezultat, sa šest pominjanja u kategorijama kastinga, fotografije, šminke i frizure, originalne muzike, zvuka i vizuelnih efekata.

Među ostalim zapaženim naslovima su "Marty Supreme", "One Battle After Another", "Sentimental Value" i međunarodni kandidat "Sirât".

Kategorija međunarodnog dugometražnog filma donijela je malo iznenađenja, iako je distributer Neon obezbijedio rekordnih pet od ukupno 15 dostupnih mjesta.

Akademijina prva lista u kategoriji kastinga obuhvata devet filmova sa ženama na poziciji kasting direktorki, što predstavlja značajan korak napred u pogledu zastupljenosti.

Rediteljke su takođe ostavile snažan trag u ovogodišnjem izboru: sedam od 15 međunarodnih dugometražnih filmova režirale su žene, a čak 10 od 15 kandidata u kategoriji dugometražnog dokumentarnog filma takođe potpisuju autorke.

Konačne nominacije u kategorijama biće određene u narednim nedjeljama, a glasanje za Oskare počinje u ponedeljak, 12. januara i završava se u petak, 16. januara. Nominacije će biti objavljene u četvrtak, 22. januara.
